E-Liquid Colour Changes: Why Your Vape Juice is Turning Brown

Whether you found an old pod, left a pack in your car, or are just a casual vape user, you may have noticed that your e-liquid has changed colour over time. While the initial shock of seeing the colour change and asking, “why did my vape juice turn brown?” may be off-putting, the colour change is a normal reaction and, unless it is really dark, won’t impact the vaping experience.

Why Does Vape Juice Turn Brown in a Pod?

Much like the flesh of an apple browning over time, the colour change sometimes seen in e-liquid is caused by oxidation or the chemical reaction that occurs when certain substances are exposed to oxygen.

The oxidation process is totally normal and can occur in any e-liquid exposed to air, light, and heat for too long. Additionally, contact with the coil or cotton wick inside the pod could cause some of the added sweeteners in the e-liquid to react to the heat and change colour. This is likely why your vape juice turns brown when your pod is almost empty as the liquid thickens and builds up on the coil.

If the e-liquid in your pod still hasn’t passed the expiration date printed on the package but it has turned brown due to being left out or improperly stored, then it is still safe to use, and the quality of your vaping experience should be normal. However, if your vape juice turns dark brown or is well past the expiration date, your best bet is to start fresh.

Preventing E-Liquid Colour Changes

The best way to prevent vape juice from turning brown is to store your vape pods properly. Always store your pods in a cool, dark environment, and do not remove your pods from their individual blister packaging until you are ready to use them. It is also helpful to avoid agitating the pods as shaking the pods could create bubbles, meaning more air is touching more liquid resulting in a higher chance of oxidation.

If you notice the e-liquid turning brown in your pod, there isn’t much you can do to slow down the process. The only way to prevent vape juice from turning brown is to keep it away from oxygen, light, and heat as much as possible.

If you are travelling with your vape pods, be sure to keep them in your personal items and not to check them as luggage holds in airplanes, trains, buses, and even your own car will be more exposed to outside changes in temperature.
